The Ethics Council will start working soon

Event

On November 12, the Council of Judges announced that it had received a letter from members of the Ethics Council appointed under the quota of international and foreign organizations, informing that they would arrive in Kyiv soon.

On November 9, the Ethics Council became effective and its creation was welcomed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as by the European Union, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Canada, the UNDP, and the EBRD.

CPLRs assessment

Within the next 6 months, the Ethics Council should review the integrity of the High Council of Justice (HCJ) current members, with an option to recommend the dismissal of those members who do not pass the review. In parallel, the Council will be able to review the integrity of candidates to the HCJ. Competitions for the HCJ positions are currently ongoing for members under the quota of scholars and the Parliament, and in the near future, at least two positions of the HCJ members under the quota of judges will become vacant.

It should be recalled that the integrity review of current and future HCJ members by an independent commission with international participation is the public’s demand and one of Ukraine’s key obligations to the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.
